
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah was the second child born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most well-known for her political activism, acting abilities, and ability to rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the name "delicate and sensitive" when she was just eight years old. Latifah began singing with the choir of the church of Shiloh located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in a play of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mother was a catalyst as she was always in contact with the students as well as the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey who is also known as D.J., was invited to attend the event.
